Porsche 911 paint colors and codes, 1964–1973.

The early 911’s palette extended well beyond the colors in its showroom folder. This reference follows the standard and special selections from 1964 through 1973, pairing each name and code with its year and original source.

1964–1973 / THE ORIGINAL BODY

The choice
behind the chart.

A sales folder could make Porsche’s color range look pleasantly manageable. The workshop literature told a longer story. Alongside Porsche’s familiar four-digit codes, its special-color tables listed five-digit references and numbers from the RAL color system.

By 1972, the standard folder offered nine colors, while a separate Sonderfarben sheet added another twenty. Black sat in that second selection beside Rose Red and Metallic Green. Ordering a quiet color could involve the same extra folder as ordering an exuberant one.

The year groups below follow the original documents. The early factory supplement groups 1964 and 1965 together; later folders distinguish the ordering references for Coupé and Targa. The detailed 1972 and 1973 chapters explain the differences between the sales literature and later paint records.

1964–1965

The first palette.

The factory workshop supplement groups the first two years together: seven standard colors and four special selections, including Dolphin Gray, Togo Brown, Bali Blue and Black.

1966

Beyond the nine.

Nine standard references appear in the factory list, with another twenty-two special-color entries. Black appears both as 6609 in the standard range and as 95043 in the special-color table.

1967

Two documents, two ranges.

The March 1967 folder gives codes beginning with 66. The workshop supplement labels the range beginning with 68 as 1967/68. This year’s results include both sets of references.

1968

A revised palette.

The workshop supplement’s 1967/68 table lists nine standard colors, including Ossi Blue, Burgundy Red and Tangerine, followed by twenty-two special-color references.

1969

A new model year.

The factory folder dated October 1968 supplies the 1969 standard palette. The twenty-two special-color entries come from Peter Morgan’s table for 1969.

1970

The 2.2-liter years.

Workshop page A 104 explicitly covers 1970 and 1971: nine standard colors and twenty-one named special colors. The directory reproduces its separate Coupé and Targa ordering references.

1971

A folder and a workshop table.

The factory brochures show nine standard and twenty special colors. Workshop page A 104 also lists Metallic Red, bringing the combined reference to thirty named entries. Paint-supply sheets add three-digit codes where printed.

Nine, then twenty.

The standard folder and the Special Colours sheet together name twenty-nine colors. The 1972 chapter compares their ordering references with the later factory paint matrix.

READING THE REFERENCE

A number needs
its context.

Start with the year. Names and numbering systems changed. A familiar color name can appear under different references in different years, and an ordering reference in a sales folder serves a different purpose from a paint code.

Read the code label. Each entry identifies the kind of number reproduced from its source. The early special-color tables include five-digit workshop references and RAL numbers. Later entries can carry a factory paint code alongside separate Coupé and Targa ordering references.

Open the notes for the original names. German, French and Italian names appear where the cited material supplies them. The notes explain differences between the documents, with fuller comparisons in the 1972 and 1973 chapters.

Keep availability separate from production. These documents describe colors offered or recorded for a year. They do not count how many cars were built in each color. A car’s paint plate and original paperwork establish its own place in that history.
