AT SPEED MOTORS / WORKSHOP JOURNAL
Inside the
workshop.
Mechanical preparation at At Speed Motors, caring for a survivor from engine-out servicing to final setup.
STAINLESS STEEL / A VIEW FROM BELOW Making room.
The car on the lift. The engine on the trolley. A familiar shape begins to reveal the machinery underneath.

Lowering the drivetrain
The engine and gearbox come down together onto a trolley, opening up access to the rear of the car.

Room to work
Behind the rear seats, the empty compartment awaits the flat-six. The open lid frames a view normally filled by the engine and its air cleaner.

Working underneath
With the car overhead, the underside is within reach for cleaning and close inspection.

With the engine removed, the fan drive, intake linkages and cooling tinwork are exposed for servicing.

Cooling at the center
The belt-driven fan sends cooling air over the engine. Beside it, the covers and surrounding metalwork are accessible with the flat-six out of the car.

Fan, belt and pulley
The fan dominates this view. Below it, the crankshaft pulley drives the belt that turns the fan and alternator.

The mechanical arrangement
Fuel lines, intake hardware and linkages surround the fan. These are the working parts behind the S’s mechanical fuel injection.

Hands on the flat-six
The black air-cleaner housing is back above the engine as work continues around the intake assembly.

Access from every side
With the engine on the trolley, the cooling tinwork, exhaust connections and intake assembly can be inspected before refitting.

Usually out of sight: the brakes, steering connections, gearbox supports and heat exchangers that keep the car working as a whole.

Brakes and KONI Reds
A new front brake disc beside the refinished KONI strut housing—two parts of the chassis refresh.

The steering connection
The tie-rod end links the steering rack to the wheel’s steering arm. Its joint allows movement as the wheel steers and the suspension travels.

Stainless steel heat exchangers
Fresh air warms around hot exhaust pipes inside these housings, keeping cabin air separate from exhaust gases. With the rear muffler off, the outlet connection is exposed.

The crossmember, removed
The removed crossmember and mounts can be examined together. The mounts support the gearbox while isolating vibration from the body.

The crossmember, back in place
Now installed beneath the ribbed gearbox casing, the refurbished crossmember carries the transmission on its mounts.
Watch the reelComing together.
The flat-six returns to its place behind the rear axle. There is still work to do around the installed engine and underneath the car.

Back in the chassis
The flat-six is back behind the rear axle, with the lifting trolley still beneath the car.

The engine bay, filled again
The fan and black air-cleaner housing return to their familiar positions beneath the rear lid.

Attention to the engine bay
Protective covers drape over the rear bodywork while the mechanic works around the installed engine.

The front end, assembled
The red KONI strut housing and steering arm stand out beneath the car, with the brake disc and steering linkage alongside.
Watch the reelFit and final tuning.
The old muffler looked much like the right part. Its fit was another matter. A factory-correct replacement now sits beneath the engine, while Rich adjusts the injection settings following the valve adjustment.

The muffler that came off
The removed silencer rests on the workshop floor. Its shape resembles the stock unit, but its fit and position prompted the replacement.

The replacement, fitted
The new factory-correct rear muffler is installed beneath the engine. With the rear bodywork still apart, its gray finish and mounting position are clearly visible.
Watch this moment
The engine during MFI tuning
The flat-six is back in the car, with the engine lid raised for access. Following the valve-clearance adjustment, Rich is working through the mechanical fuel injection settings.
