ON THE ROAD / 2.4 LITRES

Behind the wheel.

How did the 2.4 S feel when it was new? Two period reports take us to the factory launch and the circuit at Riverside.

01 / RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA

The S at speed.

In a track comparison with the T and E, the S came alive around 5,000 rpm and exceeded 130 mph on Riverside’s back straight. Bedard found light steering, a supple ride and a forceful engine note, but also demanding handling, rubbery shift action and less composure in traffic.

02 / ZUFFENHAUSEN, GERMANY

The arrival of the 2.4.

The launch report for the 1972 range introduces the ingredients carried into the 1973 S: a 2,341 cc engine, Bosch fuel injection and 190 DIN horsepower. More torque accompanied the larger displacement. A redesigned gearbox moved fifth into its own plane, while the S gained an anti-lift front spoiler.
